Backstory:

In addition to paid labor and family labor, women in Southeast Chicago were the driving force behind a wide range of community groups that contributed to the richness of social life in the region. Such groups ranged from parent-teacher associations that sponsored scholarships and other activities, like the one here pictured for Warren School, to a variety of ethnic, religious, political, environmental, and other community groups. This picture was donated by Helen Preston, a resident of the Calumet Heights region of South Chicago. Ms. Preston also donated a wide range of images associated with the Consolidated Community Improvement Association.
