Men playing checkers during strike

Date Created: undated

Donor: Edward Sadlowski

Media Type: Photograph

Language: English

Backstory:

This image shows two men playing checkers while on the picket line outside US Steel – South Works during the 1959 steel strike. The man on the right standing behind them is District 31 Director of the United Steelworkers of America (USWA) union, Joe Germano. Standing on the picket line could get dull. Other images in the Museum show men playing checkers, like these men, during other strikes, or supporters bringing them coffee or in other ways trying to keep up their spirits.
