Backstory:

This photograph was one of many donated by US Steel – South Works about the history of the plant. This photo was part of a series taken on May 14, 1947 when the mill (then known as Carnegie-Illinois) held an open house. Open houses that invited members of the community to visit the mill happened periodically at South Works. Although many African-Americans worked in the steel mills, they often did not live in Southeast Chicago until the 1960s because of housing discrimination. However, even before, there were smaller African-American settlements including in the Millgate region of South Chicago near the South Works plant.
