Sergeant Frank Kalwasinski

Date Created: circa 1944

Donor: Kitty Markovich

Media Type: Photograph

Backstory:

Sergeant Frank Kalwasinski was a Carnegie/U.S. Steel-South Works employee. He was killed in action during World War II in France on July 26, 1944. Frank was the brother of Kazmira “Kitty” Kalwasinki Markovich who was also a steelworker at South Works along with other siblings and their father, Stanley. Other photographs in the Museum depict Kitty as a “Rosie the Riveter” of South Works. In one photo, she has the names of her five brothers serving in World War II written on her welding helmet. The solid star next to Frank’s name indicated that he had been killed in action.
