Donor: Roberta Wood

Media Type: Photograph

Backstory:

This photo depicts an event called Solidarity Day, the March for Jobs and Justice, held in Washington, D.C. on Sept. 19, 1981 and attended by members of USWA Local 65 (US Steel – South Works). The march was called by the AFL-CIO in response to President Ronald Reagan’s firing of 12,000 air traffic controllers (PATCO) for striking. Labor groups from around the country, including Local 65, boarded buses and trains to reach D.C. This photograph was donated by steelworker Roberta Wood, who organized five buses to take Local 65 members to the event. Woods was an instrument mechanic at South Works and an Executive Board member for Local 65.
